History

Castle & Cooke Cold Storage is the latest venture by the 150-year-old real estate development and management corporation founded in Hawaii, which is privately owned by David H. Murdock, who also owns Dole Food Co.

Castle & Cooke put Inland Cold Storage (ICS) and Madison Warehousing under the C&C umbrella in late 2008 to give it an immediate strong national presence from California through the Midwest to the East Coast.

ICS was founded in 1979 by William “Bill” Hendricksen with an initial development of a 47,250-square foot cold storage building in Riverside, Calif.

ICS met with immediate success, doubling in size in less than two years, opening a second freezer facility in Ontario, Calif., in 1982, again doubling in size, and underwent expansion on a regular basis, again in Riverside with new buildings, followed by additional facilities in Vernon (Los Angeles), Fontana, and Rialto, Calif. The newest facility opened in Stockton, Calif., in February, 2009.

With the more than 61.9 million cubic feet of refrigerated storage brought by ICS, Castle & Cooke vaults to the seventh-largest such company in the United States and ninth largest in the world, not counting the 10 warehouse locations of Madison Warehouse Corp., which specializes in dry storage.

Madison, which was founded in 1917 as a dry public storage facility, is headquartered in St. Louis and has 10 separate facilities in St. Louis (3), Ft. Worth, Chicago (3), Decatur, Ill., and Baltimore (2).
